CDI Alliance, which was set up in July 2011 to deliver economic sector development and business support activity, has won a major contract in South Yorkshire.

This month CDI Alliance signed a contract with Sheffield City Council to launch and project manage a new business support initiative, the CDI New Opportunities Programme, on behalf of Creative Sheffield (the economic development organisation for Sheffield City Council). Small and medium businesses have yet to harness the potential of the internet, says Matt Warman – yet doing so could make an £18 billion difference

There’s a £63billion ‘if’ at the heart of the UK economy, according to a report commissioned by lastminute.com founder Martha Lane Fox. That’s how much better off the UK’s digital champion reckons the country would be if we were the leaders of the digital world.

Revealed: Top 10 digital trailblazers

 A Top Ten list pinpoints the rural areas where online entrepreneurs are boosting the local economy.

The Rural Digital Trailblazers league table was devised by internet giant Google, which teamed up with the Countryside Alliance.

The project aims to highlight that entrepreneurs needn’t be based in an industrial centre or a traditional urban hub to start or grow a business.

At some point in the past few months, China’s billionth mobile phone customer switched on his or her handset for the first time. The mobile network growth here has been remarkable, with some 80 million new subscribers coming online every year for the past decade.

But in some ways the real communications revolution has only just begun. This year, China will overtake America as the world’s biggest smartphone market. And for many Chinese, the smartphone offers them their first personal route to access the internet – by some estimates 40% of those connecting to the web in China now do so solely via a mobile phone. WANdisco founder David Richards believes his company’s flotation shows there is “life past the Watford gap”.

Mr Richards transferred the company’s UK headquarters from London to Sheffield three years ago because of the levels of expertise he could tap into in the South Yorkshire city.

The first Lincolnshire Digital Business Cluster networking event took place at Oak House in Lincoln on 24 January 2012. Stuart McFarlane from CDI Alliance opened the meeting by explaining the objectives of the project and posing three questions.

    • The local digital expertise, capability, products & services
    • Why is business conducted outside of the County & why do customers buy outside of the County

    • increase the awareness of your products and services to the local Lincolnshire market
